June favourites

Sorry i'm so late with this guys. I really wanted to get this up sooner but hey ho life happens.

I cant believe how much this month has flown by already. Half way through July, which can only mean one thing, its my birthday next week. Eeeek. Cant believe im going to be 25 this year, just saying that makes me feel old.

There hasn't really been a lot of different things I've loved throughout June, but here are 5 things I've loved.

My hair has been so dry and damaged (booked in for a hair cut in two weeks - cant wait!!!) so to help with that I've been using the John Frieda miraculous recovery hair mask. I love this stuff and for those of you that are new here is a link to a previous post i wrote about it http://missshortstuff91.blogspot.co.uk/2016/04/review-john-frieda-miraculous-recovery.html
Another hair product ive been using a hell of a lot is the John Frieda nourishing oil elixir, i apply this once ive blow dried my hair. This has worked absolute wonders to smooth down my frizzy ends on really bad days.

My sister told me about this Imperial Leather marshmallow shower gel it sounded sooo good, so i took a trip to Superdrug and once i smelt it i knew it was made for me. It smells really sweet but its not overpowering either. Definitely going to be my go to Summer shower gel.

My go to fragrance for June has to be the body shops pink grapefruit body mist i think its just because it smells so zingy and clean. I don't think there has been a day when i didnt wear it.

Finally I've been a little book worm again, digging my head into what ever books i can find. This month I've finished two books Me before you and One perfect summer, both which were really good. I think im going to do review on these at a later date so im not going to go into detail about them. I find reading so peaceful and i love how you can feel like you've been transported into another place.

What is your Summer scent? What books have you been picking up to read?

Devils food cake

A couple of Sundays ago i spent the day with my sister, we met in town Sunday morning and had a bit of a mooch. We got what we needed and then headed back to my mums, We had decided whilst we were out that we would attempt to make a devils food cake. It looked so damn good in the recipe book that we'd seen it in that we just had to try and bake it.
Here is the recipe we used if you want to try it for yourselves.

Ingredients

For the cake

  • 75g spreadable butter
  • 250g light soft brown sugar
  • 3 medium eggs
  • 100g dark chocolate chips
  • 175g plain flour
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • pinch of salt
  • 185ml milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Vanilla buttercream
  • 100g butter
  • 200g icing sugar
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
Fudgey chocolate icing
  • 150g chocolate chips (milk,dark or white)
  • 90g butter
  • 160ml condensed milk
Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C (165 degrees fan) and prepare two 20cm sandwich tins.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together and mix well. It will not be a pale and fluffy texture like when you normally bake a cake. Gradually add the egg and mix well.
  3. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over hot water. Let it cool a little, then gently stir into the creamed mixture.
  4. Combine the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt and gradually add to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk and vanilla.
  5. Divide the mixture between the two sandwich tins and level the tops. Bake for 30 - 35 minutes or until the cakes are springy and when a knife inserted in the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool.
  6. While the cake is cooling cut the butter for the butter cream into small pieces and put into a bowl with the sieved icing sugar and vanilla extract and beat well.
  7. Add the butter cream to top of one of the cakes.
  8. Put all the ingredients for the fudgey chocolate icing into a small pan and stir the mixture over a low heat until the chocolate and butter have melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and leave to cool until it can be spread.
  9. Once cooled apply the other cake on top of the one with butter cream. Then spread the fudgey mixture all over and its ready to eat.

What have you been baking lately?
